This paper raised a "warning bell" for quantum computation: maybe errors in quantum computers are such a big problem that they cannot be solved. It's not at all obvious that fault-tolerant quantum computation is possible, so it was a big deal when it was achieved. Rolf Landauer kept talking about this in the follow-up paper
