This is the canonical reference for the theory of fusion categories, tensor categories, module categories, and related subjects. It is an invaluable mathematical reference.

For learning about topological quantum information, however, it does have some shortcomings. The first shortcoming is that this book does not make any of its connections to physics clear to the uninitiated reader. The second shortcoming is that it does not use the graphical language of string diagrams for monoidal categories. This makes it hard to compare the results of EGNO to non-categorical discussions of topological quantum information.
